    I used Jan from Vanguard to repair and replace a couple plumbing fixtures recently. It became a very long day of repairs for him, as the job required more than we initially expected, and Im very pleased with the results. It was a pleasure to work with Jan, he was upfront about his pricing, he guided me on which replacement items Id need, he was very thorough in explaining the procedures he was using and why, and he also cleaned up well after he completed his work. I highly recommend him for home plumbing repairs/replacements.

Never have I felt this good about hiring a trades person.Not only were they the most competitive quote to replace our water heaters and redo some under sink plumbing, but they went above and beyond with their work (finding gas leaks, obtaining a special tool and coming back to fix the remaining leaks).     I recently hired Vanguard Plumbing to install a new kitchen faucet and replace some old valves, and I couldnt be more impressed with their work. From start to finish, the experience was seamless. The reviews sounded almost too good to be true, but my experience was consistent with other reviewers. From the beginning of our conversations, the owner, Jan Pietraszek, asked a lot of questions and provided solid advice. He gave me options and price points, then let me decide which ones felt most comfortable. It felt like a partnership rather than a vendor/client relationship, which I really appreciated. When Jan and his colleague, George, arrived on the agreed-upon date, they found more issues than we had anticipated, yet they took everything in stride and handled the situation like pros.     I bought an older home in 2020 and have had to do a good amount of plumbing work - since the first job, Ive used nobody but Vanguard and I will continue to do so in the future. They have been great at handling all scales of matters - from clearing a kitchen sink drain to replacing a basements worth of corroded pipes and valves - with promptness, precision, and professionalism. They have routinely identified followup matters that I will want to look into when fixing something else. Both unit water heaters, all the main pipes, and several small fixtures were their work and I have had no problems at all since they completed everything.

    Jan is a skilled plumber. Gave me a preliminary diagnosis on my issue with my basement toilet and shower drain backing up. Arrived on time on the day he was scheduled to come by and fixed the issue I had. Cleaned the ejector pit, that was full of roots, and installed a new ejector pump. This solved my issue. Competent, on time, and able to fix my somewhat complex plumbing issue on the first try. Happy

    If I had known that Jans copper plumbing was going to be so beautiful, I would have asked him to install it inside the room insted of inside the wall.I spoke to several companies about my project. Vanguard was the only one that found a balance between what I wanted and what my 130 year old house needed. Jan resolved the complicated venting and draining issues and created an elaborate system in my basement bathroom and kitchen which will be invisible and take up no space. Best of all, I didnt have to add another vent out the roof.Jan and his crew were funny, personable and very experienced. They earned my trust with the work they performed and the knowledge they shared. Id have no trouble recommending them for any size job.

    Lets talk about amazing service and value that Jan and his team put on customer satisfaction.When I first reached out to Jan about a new sump pump and backup install he requested pictures so he can accurately provide an estimate. I loved this because it allowed me to get an idea of what I am going to need to invest without wasting any time having someone come to my house. Within minutes I had an estimate emailed to me.After deciding to go with Vanguard his team showed up a day later and they did an amazing job and they were extremely professional.This is where Vanguard took it to the next level with customer services and support. After spending a small fortune on this new sump pump system the alarms were going off more than what I would expect. Jan immediately took charge of the situation and worked with the manufacture to have my system upgraded due to a small defect. A few days later he was over to install the upgraded system.We thought our issues were over but the story doesnt end here. We had a different alarm going off after the upgraded was installed so after sending Jan a couple of videos he was back over to trouble shoot the system. Jan went over every part and figured out a different part of the system was defected. Luckily he had a brand new replacement part in the truck.It has been a week since Vanguard and Jan completed their work and I really couldnt be happier with all the attention and service we got. Obviously there is some disappointment with the manufacture of the pump but that isnt on Vanguard.At the end of the day Vanguard and Jan stood by their work, they stand by the products, and the went the extra mile to make sure I was happy.I would HIGHLY recommend Vanguard for all your plumbing and sewer needs!

    I had a great experience with Vanguard. They requested photos of the two issues I was having, and I received a call from Jan to discuss in detail his suggestions based on what he was seeing. I was able to get the main concern, a clogged bathtub, resolved quickly. The technician who came was very helpful and explained everything he was doing and why he was doing it that way.     When we purchased our home eight years ago, the inspection report said our plumbing was good to go. After living here for a while, we learned that was not the case. Vanguard helped us with a clogged sewer line, an old catch basin, an inefficient stack, old ejector and sump pumps, water heater failure and sensitive toilets. They even rerouted our kitchen sink! Jan and his team are the best! Early on we priced out 3 quotes, Vanguard was always competitively priced. We’ve not had any issues with what they’ve fixed, they show up on time, and clean up after themselves. They are now our go-to for anything plumbing related. Fingers crossed I won’t need to see them for a while, the only thing left is the water line!

    This review is long overdue. Jan has done work for us a few times in the past year. His work and communication skills are excellent. I’ve never written a review before but I felt it was important to write this one. I can’t recommend him enough. He replaced our sump pumps, put in new piping, valves, cleaned out the pit and installed a new backup system. He was thorough in explaining how the new backup system worked. In addition to this project, he placed a safety pan below our water heater. This involved removing the water heater, placing the pan and reinstalling the water heater. During this project he installed a new mixing valve, corrected a connection valve from a previous plumber and installed an expansion tank. Jan is a delight to work with. His communication is excellent. He takes the time to investigate your project and answer all questions. He has you send pictures ahead of time to get a clear picture of the project. Never once does he try to sell you on his services. He lays it all out for you to decide if you want quality, thorough work.

    Vanguard plumbing is amazing!! They were able to get to us promptly and stayed late to try every avenue to unclog the drain. After realizing best case was to let water drain over the weekend and come back early next week to see if they could use their camera to unclog drain. And successful, they were! They also took the time to explain why the problem had happened and how to prevent it. Additionally, after we paid, they showed us how to shut off our hot water heater, where our main water shut of was, and more! Looking out for first time home owners.     We have used Vanguard for some other plumbing issues. So when our water heater pilot light wouldnt stay lit, we called Vanguard first. Jan asked for some pictures via email and then stopped by after a call. He recommended we do a full replacement after assessing our water heater.He listened to our needs and looked at the existing system which included a recirculating pump. He made his recommendations along with an option to replace the pump. We agreed with replacing it all.The next day his team showed up bright and early to get started. Jan stopped by to go over any questions. The team was quick to remove the old heater and then install the new one. Appreciated that they were able to get a new heater and installed in about 24 hours!Would use Vanguard again and recommend them!

    I’ve hired Vanguard many times over the last six or so years for a four unit building that my wife and I own. We are “mom and pop” landlords that shouldn’t be in the landlord game at all.     I chose Vanguard because they were located near me and had been in business for over a decade. I emailed a photo with my (non-emergency) issue and they replied to me first thing next day to get more details. They weren’t able to come out right away, but I take that as a good sign when a plumber is busy enough with work to not be immediately available. I wanted to pay a professional to get the job done correctly, the first time, and was willing to accept what that kind of work costs. I emailed on Tuesday night and by Thursday morning Jan was able to come out (earlier than anticipated) and solved my issue within an hour. Jan had the right tools, replacement parts, and even took the time to educate me about some valves on my water heater in my new-to-me condo. He was professional and friendly.     Vanguard did an excellent job helping with a unique project that other plumbing companies were not able to solve. I was looking to convert my double basin sink to a single basin, and Jan was a huge help from the initial phone conversation, to connecting me with another contractor who could modify the countertop, to completing a clean and great looking install. Jan and George installed a new faucet, garbage disposal, and connected the remaining plumbing fixtures.     I was very pleased with the work that Vanguard did in my condo and will certainly call them again for any needed work. George was on-time and went right to work. He fixed my dripping shower faucet (and the faucet handle that kept falling off), installed a new shower head (been meaning to do that) and restored the hot water pressure for my bathroom sink faucet.Any sort of work that requires a water shutoff for our multi-unit building always worries me—it can (and often does) result in sediment clogging feed lines (and pipes!). Realizing that I was very concerned about the water shutoff, George was very reassuring. He explained how he was going to proceed and went through each step of the shut down and water restoration with me. Absolutely beautiful shut down and restoration!

    Another quality plumbing repair by Vanguard! Our fridge water supply line sprung a leak, and after an appliance repair company declined to do the work, we called Vanguard. This was the second time we had engaged Vanguard, and the two-man crew was every bit as courteous, competent and professional this time as it was last time. They were punctual, wore shoe covers inside (and otherwise respected our property), worked diligently to replace the plastic supply line with a copper one, cleaned up after themselves, and performed the work in less time than estimated, saving us money. Plumbers even diagnosed and quickly fixed a small leak in our kitchen sink faucet, which was beyond the scope of the quoted work, and asked, “Anything else?” before leaving. I would not hesitate to use Vanguard again, or to recommend them. Highly professional!!

    Jan has been a trusted professional working on our 100+ year old home. He repiped the first level of our home and increased the water pressure so much (the old pipes were too small and filled with sediment). He installed a new very efficient hot water heater. He also helped us install drainage outside our basement. Most recently he identified a clog on the city side of our property and got the inspector to come out and the city will be taking care of that issue - a huge project that Im so thankful he was able to handle. Due to the unusual layout of our utility room, the size of the old water heater, and the age of the existing piping, this was a complex project. Jan walked through a number of issues during the pre-bid stage to ensure that he was prepped for any and all potential complications with the project. Jan and George then completed the project thoroughly, professionally, and meticulously. They even spotted and repaired additional issues with the gas lines and ventilation and with two of our toilets. I would absolutely hire them again should the need arise.

    Jan and his assistant surpassed my expectations. I needed to replace my toilet, and had gotten jerked around by J. Blanton. Jan is very knowledgeable and honest and got my job done within the estimated time.     Vanguard sent out two professionals to install a new water heater in our basement. The water heater is located in a tricky spot: in the back of our basement, behind HVAC system on one side, sink on the other, wall, and sump pump. They navigated around all of this, installed the new water heater, and cleaned up nicely; they also took the time to explain how it worked and make sure our questions were answered. We really appreciated this.We had sent many pictures and talked through the install with Vanguard prior to the professionals coming out, so the total time was exactly what was estimated, as well as the cost, despite the tricky install and having to reinstall our slop sink and move the washer.

    Just wanted to write a quick review for the guys from Vanguard Plumbing concerning a recent kitchen sink fix they did for me. Really cant say enough about how pleased I am with my experience with them when my 15yr old kitchen sink metal pipes finally corroded through. Jan from the main office was great about getting back to me when I asked for a quote and getting me scheduled quickly when a time slot opened up last minute. Jan had originally quoted me 2hrs of labor plus materials for a total cost of nearly $500. A little pricey, but they were able to come out quickly and fix a sink I couldnt use. So it was a nice surprise that their team was able to fix the issue in under an hour, which brought the price down to a very reasonable $300 total.Was very impressed with all facets of my experience with Vanguard. Jan was great about following up on the quote.     After trying to fix a leaking pipe under my bathroom sink and realizing it needed to be cut and replaced, I found Vanguard via a Yelp search and received an estimate. I thought it could be a bit high, so I got a few other estimates and realized that it was going to be a bigger project than I assumed. I ultimately went with Vanguard based on their excellent reviews and I am happy I did. They set up an appointment next day and completed the job in essentially the estimated time. I also had them replace an o-ring on one of my toilets as we were getting sewer odors. Come to find out it wasnt the o-ring, it was a lack of a proper flange. So that also needed to be replaced. All-in-all, the quality and service were excellent. Will definitely reach out to Vanguard first with my next plumbing need.

    I had a new water heater put in and it turned out great. The owner Jan came out and evaluated what had to be done because it was a lowboy type of heater and it needed to be measured also the outdated pipes needed to be replaced.     I have had to call Jan and his guys out 2 times, the 3rd time, Jan talked me through the simple faucet repair on the phone. I can not say enough good things about Jan and his company, he and his guys all wear masks, are polite and courteous, professional and the amount quoted is exactly what I have paid. Jan responds very quickly to every call and email I have sent. I have worked in construction for 28 years, having any workmen respond quickly is rare. I have done my own rehab work with the help of various tradesmen and know the industry. I bought my home at the end January 2020, RIGHT before Covid 19 started. As I only had 3.5 weeks to get my work done before I moved in, I hired a licensed plumber to get multiple items done before I moved in. Needless to say the guy did nothing but take shortcuts and put band aids on most everything he touched. Within a few months the issues started. A backed up tub drain the guy was supposed to have cleared was clogged again (turns out, he never cleared anything), a sump pump he installed failed, some pipe work he did was not done properly. Jan has properly repaired all the items, quickly and as cost effectively as possible. He is now my only plumber, I will never use any other company.     The project undertaken was to replace a 20 year old water heater with new and correct issues causing poor water pressure in a 60+ year old Chicago residence.Jan and Chris arrived on time and hit the ground running and never slowed down. The water tank was replaced and brought on line in less time than was estimated. If you admire good craftsmanship youll love Vanguard, the pipe fitting and copper sweating are truly superior . It made me question what I received from prior service providers.As for the poor water pressure issue, I had convinced myself that the only remedy would be to have a booster pump installed. Our home has had remodeling of the plumbing on all three levels. So all the piping has been modernized and replaced with copper except for the holt/cold risers between the basement and the two bathrooms. After Jan had a look at the bathroom fixtures and the transitions between the new copper and the old galvanized riser pipes he had a different idea as to what would fix the pressure issue. He suggested replacing the valve system in the new shower that had mixing valve. And, replace the non-brass die-electric unions (connecting the old piping to the new), with brass fittings before spending the roughly $4000.00 to install a booster pump. As it turned out, at each point in this process Jan was right, there was significant blockage in the fixtures and DE unions. Long story short, Im very happy with the water pressure at all of my fixtures and it cost a lot less in labor and parts than the booster pump! These guys know plumbing and that is evident in their honesty, workmanship and troubleshooting.

    I have used Vanguard Plumbing for a number of tasks in both my condo and for the building on behalf of our Condo Association. Recently, I hired them to replace the SumpPro battery backup unit for our building sump pumps.The unit is located in a hard to reach area only about 4 feet tall and it weighs a total of 200 lbs with batteries. So id have to say, its a back breaker of job. The guys showed up on time as I have come to expect from Vanguard. They removed the old unit and installed the new unit in under an hour. They left the area cleaner than what it was before they showed up. And Jan from Vanguard follows up after the job is completed to make sure everything was done to my satisfaction, which it was.I looked on line for the prices of new SumpPro battery backup units (not including shipping costs), and the price was the same as what Vanguard quoted me. And of course, the quote from Vanguard included installation. So the decision to hire Vanguard was a no-brainer since the alternative was to pay more to buy it myself and Id still have to do the installation.I will continue to call Vanguard for my plumbing needs because I know I can count on them to do a thorough job and not take any short cuts.

    During heavy rains, water backed up in a drain just outside our basement door. Water flooded the basement floor. We called Vanguard, which we have used four times before, and sent pictures of the drain. The next day they set up an appointment for two days hence, then called later because they could come a day earlier. The two Vanguard servicemen quickly assessed the situation, removed the drain cover and began clearing the drain. At one point I saw one worker with his arm almost completely in the drain as he removed the dead leaves and other materials that caused the clog. The workers used our hose to flush the drain, making sure the water flowed to our sump pump and out into city sewers. It all took about 20 minutes.

    Needed a plumber familiar with (and undaunted by) the quirky plumbing surprises an 80+ year old building can present so once again, and of course, I turned to Vanguard Plumbing for their expertise. The owner, Jan, is very knowledgeable and accommodating, quickly getting me on the schedule, and his tech, George, knows his stuff and did excellent work, as usual (he’s repaired/replaced a few things in ‘this old condo’, over the years). With his assistant, Chris, they worked a small miracle replacing a slow, old tub drain, replacing faulty shut off valves (including two, original red-knobbed room shut offs) and recapping an above-floor capped radiator pipe so it’s now below the floor so my new marble flooring will be obstruction-free! I also really like how accommodating they all are with all of my questions. I don’t want to get in their way, but I do appreciate being able to learn a few things about our plumbing system (that’s even more ‘vintage’ than me!).

Jan most recently saved me $8,000 from what a BIG chain plumber quoted me, and he fixed the problem in less than three hours.     I got quotes from several places which were significantly cheaper but I will say Jan and his team were worth the price. I came to them with an enormous list of issues that piled up during the last two years and they were able to tackle them quickly with quality and care.     I had to replace a toilet in a bathroom where the spaces were tight. After viewing photographs, Jan figured out the one model, a Gerber Viper, that would fit in the space. They were able to schedule me in very quickly. George, an experienced plumber, and Chris, an apprentice, hauled the new toilet up three flights of stairs, put it together, installed it, and then hauled the old toilet away, and remained pleasant and calm during the whole process. Dealing with the 90-year-old pipes in my bathroom must have been challenging, but it actually took a little less time than had been estimated. Everything was cleaned up before they left.

    Jan and George have done 5 different jobs for me at a couple different places that Ive lived: (1) Fix and replace a leaking toilet flange that someone else improperly installed before I bought my condo, (2) Replaced my leaking water heater (3) Replace a leaking shower valve as well as old supply lines to the valve + install new quarter-turn shutoffs, (4) install a new zero-freeze exterior hose bib plus an interior quarter-turn shutoff to the hose bib and (5) replace leaking sewage pipes.Every single job was done with a very high level of detail. When these guys sweat pipes, every joint is perfect. They clean off residual flux after they make connections. They properly anchor pipes in walls so there is no movement in the pipes when you open and close valves. They route pipes and install shutoff valves where there is easy access to the valves... etc etc. Of all the tradesman that Ive hired to do work on my current or previous homes, I probably trust these guys more than anyone else to do exceptional, high-quality work on every job.
