We are currently renovating a 100+-year-old farmhouse here in Bedford County and Coates Electrical Services has provided us with top-notch service. Not only have they upgraded our 100-amp panel to 200-amp service, but they also moved the meter box to a new wall, helped change the overhead hook-up to underground, and added a generator transfer switch for us. James Coates is extremely professional, responsive, and helpful, and his crew is very knowledgeable. Everything passed inspection perfectly and we are looking forward to having Coates Electrical help us with our next project as we continue remodeling. Highly recommend!

You should hire these guys if you want a team that is committed to customer service and a job well done. I contracted with Coates to perform a 200amp service upgrade, as well as to connect my new solar system to the grid. Their quote was reasonable and they clearly explained the details of the work that was to be performed. Their work is super clean, and a tremendous value with professionalism all around. James and Jo are model examples of electricians that care about their customers and get the job done right the first time with no gimmicks or excuses. Every contractor should to take a lesson from Coates on how to run a business while truly valuing their clients. I would hire them again in a heartbeat.

I’ve been working on light switches in my new house and I got to a spot where I needed a professional. I called Coates based on Google reviews. I called on a Friday evening and they set an appointment for Monday at noon. Leon arrived a few minutes early and was very pleasant and professional. He explained the issue and how best to fix it if I run into a similar situation. I recommend Coates and will call them again if I ever need an electrician.

Our power panel was making a sizzling noise and we noticed visible arcs on the power bus behind several breakers. James gave us a quote and scheduled the replacement for the next day! Not only is next-day service unheard of in Lynchburg, but he undercut the other companies we called that day.His team is incredibly conscientious and professional -- see pics. Looking above the new panel, notice only minimal access inside the wall. Everything was completed in a very timely manner with wiring that is neat, accurate, and tracible. Upon cleanup, the owner even got on his hands and knees to wipe up the floor after his work.I would recommend this company to anyone in need of electrical services!

Saving Grace ! I had such a bad electrical problem that I could only plug in 1 thing at a time ex: coffee pot or toaster - it was that serious! I was told to try thumbtack and I was put in touch with Coates Electric. James was quick to evaluate the problem and suggested what needed to be done and within days they were here removing the old electrical box and up grading my service! The place was neat as a pin and yes everything ran perfectly!!! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this company and James. They responded and corrected the situation and made it affordable- honestly you can’t go wrong using Coats Electrical- they had also pointed out why I was having an issue with my hot water heater ( newly purchased-poorly installed ) and corrected this too! During one of the first cold snaps of the fall our electrical panel exploded and caught fire along with much of the wiring under the house following a neighborhood wide power outage. Coates Electrical responded immediately with the utmost care and professionalism. The owner of the company personally showed up to my house to meet with us prior to the repairs being performed and was present throughout the process. He explained in detail what happened and what had to be done to remedy the problem so that we could get our power back on to warm our home. I cannot emphasize enough how much my family appreciates Mr. Coates and his team. He upgraded/replaced our electrical panel, replaced damaged wiring, and coordinated his work with the power company and the county so that the inspection was done immediately. I would recommend this company to anyone looking for the absolute best in the business to take care of vital electrical repairs and projects. Living in the dark and extension cords were trip hazards and migraine inducing!Two hours, these two gents (James and Jo) had us up and running, tested and golden with a plan to fix up any of the other questionable things in our laundry list of “to do”s. HOWEVER, with James and his team, believe the reviews. I have an old farm house (111 years old) that needed to have an updated electric panel moved inside, new range circuit and outlet installed, and four new dedicated electrical circuits installed in the kitchen and dinning room. The crawl space was very small. So small I had two companies turn me down due to the restricted crawl space. Coates Electrical didnt flinch at the crawl space size and did an excellent job. They completed everything in just a day. James Coates, the owner, is very friendly, courteous, and thorough. After I explained what I needed he walked me through how he would accomplish the job. There were no surprises and I got exactly what I wanted. I feel James truly cares about his customers and doing things the right way; even if it is the more difficult way. Thanks to James Coates of Coates Electrical, he got our generator installed in time before the first ice storm of 2025. We were without utility power for over 24 hours but the generator provided the power we needed to stay in our home. Coates Electrical is my electrical company of choice.
