We hired Thoughtful Craftsmen in the spring of 2024. We were looking for someone who could help us with our 150 year old historic house by carefully removing years of lead paint and then repairing and repainting the wood trim. We are very happy with their workmanship and attention to detail. I have attached a few before and after pictures. Thoughtful Craftsmen did a beautiful job. The crew was a really nice group of people who were neat and respectful of us and our home. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for this level of finish. -

I hired Thoughtful Craftsmen to help me diagnose and plan for future projects in my 1922 Wauwatosa bungalow. They are thoughtful (of course), very knowledgeable, informative, and practical. They understand old homes and their homeowners challenges in bringing them back to life.Their team is also a joy to work with: easy-going, funny, and down-to-earth. You wont find a better old home expert than Thoughtful Craftsmen. -

Purchased my 1907 house back in 1987 & have had exterior work done on it several times; Thoughtful Craftsmen did a fantastic job with repairs and prep, kept me up to date with photos of areas needing repair. Work was far superior to any other Ive had done on this property, especially with respect to painting prep. Areas were properly sealed off & cleaned up. Work done was very promptly completed, resulting in a rather expanded scope of work than what I firt thought I could get done. Expensive, but work is quality. -

We have hired Thoughtful Craftsmen a few times now and are always very pleased with their work. They have done interior plaster work for us, and rebuilt our storm windows for the exterior of our 1891 home. I really appreciate the care they put into the work they do. They are always polite and easy to work with, always return our calls, show up on time, and do beautiful work. We highly recommend them. Thanks! -

I cant say enough good things about Thoughtful Craftsman! We had a window in our 1940s Federalist-style brick duplex in Shorewood, that had been broken for decades. The window spring was a tricky fix due to the age and style of the building, but they handled it with absolute expertise. From the moment Joe arrived, it was clear he had a deep understanding of older homes and a passion for restoring things the right way. He took the time to explain the process and was incredibly respectful of the home’s original character. The craftsmanship was top-notch, and it’s such a relief to finally have this window working perfectly after all these years. If you’re looking for someone who truly cares about the details and knows how to handle historical homes with care and precision, Thoughtful Craftsman is the one to call! Highly recommended! -

Joe came out to look at a window in my 1929 Tudor. We spoke about several options. Joe did not pressure to make any decisions. While he was out, I also had him look at copper gutters. He was very knowledgeable about copper repair. While I am not going to immediately use their services, I will be sure to contact them in the future. It was refreshing to meet with a craftsman that was so friendly and knowledgeable. Super nice guy. Appreciated the no-pressure service. -

Thoughtful Craftsmen helped us replace our 120-year old windows with self-storing storm windows. We’re relieved that we don’t have to swap out screens for storms and vice versa at the turn of the seasons! The install was seamless and quick and our windows also qualified for state income tax credits. We will definitely reach out to Thoughful Craftsmen the next time we have a project for our historic home. -

The team at Thoughtful Craftsman communicated well and performed excellent work. They were up front about pricing and scheduling, communicated well about the scope and sequence of the project and weather delays, were flexible in adding components to the project, and were friendly to boot. I strongly recommend them! -

I needed help restoring my old Victorian, it was almost overwhelming. What I didnt realize was how hard it was to find contractors that had the knowledge of repairing the historical charm...but also the quality and attention to detail that always pays for itself in the end. Their carpenters, Dan & Alex, and copper metal workers are outstanding craftsman and I cant be happier with the quality of the installation. They know how to do things right, use the right materials, and know the right installation techniques and thats a great comfort knowing they werent looking to cut corners just to move to the next job. We restored our front porch, copper roof above our bay window, railings, cedar shingles, and crown molding along the roofline. Communication was very good, with daily work sheets to explain what they had done, and if issues came up, we addressed them right away so there were no surprises with change orders at the end.Restoring older houses is an investment in time and resources, and its nice knowing that I found a contractor who was a trusted advisor that helped me navigate all of the complexities of our restoration project. I highly recommend them to everyone that I can. -

We purchased a 1930s cream city brick house last year and hired Thoughtful Craftsmen for restoration of the long-neglected wood detailing around the front door / wood columns, installation of a new front door and (the ongoing) repair of original double-hung windows and storms.Thoughtful Craftsmen really does live up to their name and we are so grateful to have found contractors as invested in the thoughtful and historically accurate restoration of an old house as we are.Kevin and Giordi completed the front restoration and we can’t say enough good things. Giordi did a beautiful job on the painting and carpentry involved in the woodwork repair. A piece of the original trim had been removed from the front at some point and Giordi created a custom pieced that he matched to the 85 year old original trim (which is no longer produced). The window repair, which is in progress, is also great - they’ve repaired all of the glazing, painting, and made the original windows fully functional again. -

Once the project began, the team hit the grains running. Flash was able to discover and treat the problems that arose from actually opening up the damaged area to realize the problem which was a series of patchwork cobble jobs over years resulting in damage. If let unaddressed could have been far more serious. His team was efficient, hard working professionals who were polite and friendly. As a result, I am left with a feeling of confidence that the integral quality craftsmanship was money well spent. -

Our house build in 1928 has had issues with a leak in our front entryway for about 8 years. The entry way has a stone exterior with small parapet and flat roof. I had 2 roofing companies come out to do repairs and redo rubber barriers or sealing edges. Despite each coming out multiple times, they could not solve the issue. We had a stone mason come out and tuckpoint the entire exterior portion again with a continued leak.We found Thoughtful Craftsmen because they specialize in old homes like ours. They came out and evaluated the problem right away. They talked us through where the leak was likely coming from and their recommendations to fix it. They started the project within a few days and completed it quickly. They showed us what they found and the end results. Weve had two good rains since then and so far no leaks! We would highly recommend them. -

Thoughtful Craftsmen (team lead by Paul) did an excellent job restoring damaged, original windows, pulley mechanisms, and storms. They ensured everything was lead-safe, were considerate of child nap times when working in bedrooms, and pricing was very fair. They sent a detailed log each day. Excellent quality of work, and will absolutely use them again. They know old houses and really care about maintaining historic elements of these homes. -

From initial consultation to receiving a “thank you” card at project completion, it was a pleasure to have our windows restored by Thoughtful Craftsman! We want to keep all our original windows in our house (a 1939 cape cod) and we’re super glad there’s a company that shares our philosophy of restoring the old instead of always buying new.Highly recommended! -

TC has done two projects on our house.(1)Total replacement of failing cedar shingle siding on two sides of the house, replaced three copper roofs on small roofs; repaired siding, and touchup painted on one side of house.(2) window, tuning of 12 interior windows. This included restoring four windows back to pulleys and weights system. All work with done with a high level of craftsmanship, workmanship. High level of professionalism and concern for maintaining character of our home. Zero problems with communication during the project.Getting into contact with them the first time took a while, but I believe it was during a time of transition. Also, my experience is that sometimes you just have to wait for the best contractors. It was worth any waiting to be able to work with contractors such as these. Highly recommend without reservation! -

Ive used Community Building and Restoration for a number of projects now on my ~100 year old house - most recently I had them refinish the built-in buffet in my dining room, and they did a fantastic job. The original buffet had multiple layers of old paint on top of the wood, and they stripped the paint, sanded the wood, finished the wood, and installed new leaded glass panels (made by a craftsman they recommended), and I couldnt be happier with the end result. And all along theyve been helpful, responsive, and courteous. Theyll be the first people I call the next time I have a house project! -

We have hired exterior painters off an on for over thirty-five years of old-home ownership in Wauwatosa. These guys were the best painters we have ever had, and they truly earn the title of restoration painters. Hint: The key is in the wood preparation. They were also one of the very few contractors who knew how to reglaze a window. My husband was delighted! -

Thoughftul Craftsmen refurbished the original windows in my 100 year old duplex, and helped me get some stained glass repaired. The communication was fantastic, and the tenants in the duplex said everyone who worked there during the course of the project was great. All the windows are now functional and beautiful again. Thank you! -

We have a beautiful historic home, over 100 years old. Thoughtful craftsmen repaired a broken window and sash, and fixed several of our interior doors that wouldnt shut all the way. The price was less than I expected and other than the doors now actually closing you couldnt tell any work had been done! -

We were very pleased with the work done by the Thoughtful Craftman & we would not hestitate to reach out to them again! We bought our 1946 house 20 years ago & tried to fix the top of the columns, but the old plaster would crumble. We also had rotting wood & birds that kept making nests. We needed someone with more time & experience so we could keep the original look of our home. They did a wonderful job & everyone that we worked with was great! We would highly recommend!
